It doesn't require much to get involved in the fight against one of our health's biggest enemies: Mesothelioma cancer. In fact: it only takes your decision to take action to help Mesothelioma cancer victims create and fund a $30 million per year federal program.
The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, Inc., or MARF, has just been created to raise funds for research on new therapies for Malignant Mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma symptom relief is the central focus of care for the Mesothelioma patient deemed incurable. Pain management will vary with each patient. The Mesothelioma patients pre-existing conditions and exacerbating conditions are factors in determining the best Mesothelioma symptom relief and palliative care plan available. However, there are similarities in Mesothelioma treatment and symptomatic relief for pleural Mesothelioma, pericardial Mesothelioma and peritoneal Mesothelioma.
Almost every cancer patient, Mesothelioma cancer patients included, experiences painful difficulty breathing during the last stages of cancer. Medical studies have indicated that as many as 70% of terminal cancer patients experience painful difficulty breathing. With diseases such as pleural Mesothelioma, pericardial Mesothelioma and lung cancer, painful breathing and shortness of breath occurs during all of the cancer stages, not just the terminal stages.
Mesothelioma is a serious disease, and 99% of all cases are attributable to exposure to asbestos. It's a disease that can remain dormant for as long as 20 to 50 years before it starts taking its devastating toll on a person's health and life. Although the cancer may show up in less than 20 years in some cases, most people don't develop any symptoms until somewhere around 35 years after exposure. Early symptoms may not ring any bells, either, because they may be as basic as general pain in the chest or back. Therefore, anyone who ever worked in an environment where there were asbestos fibers needs to be on guard for the rest of their lives.
40 years ago when the first Mesothelioma litigation happened, the payoff, for that time period, was great. A few decades later when more lawsuits transpired due to a heightened awareness of Mesothelioma cancer due to asbestos exposure, the lawsuits became significantly larger. Today, however, lawsuits are being drawn up for "victims" of asbestos exposure who show little to no signs of any physical ailments, blocking the way for legitimate cancer sufferers from getting their due justice.

Mesothelioma is one of the few cancers that don't exhibit symptoms until the cancer reaches the late stage of development and it is at this point that many cases become incurable. It also has non-specific symptoms and thousands of cases each year are misdiagnosed as other, less severe respiratory conditions. Simply put, Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the thin layer of protective tissue around the major organs, most noticeably the lungs, heart and stomach and recently it has been positively linked to the mineral asbestos. This thin layer of tissue, the mesothelium, allows inhaled asbestos fibres to embed themselves, and it is here that they can lay dormant for up to 50 years before becoming cancerous.
